a wave knocked him down and swept him out to sea. the 22-year-old from sunny vail was on the big island in the hawaiian park paradise subdivision when he was knocked into the ocean and carried some 100 yards. george kiriyama is live where he's being remembered tonight. george? >> reporter: jessica, his family is in hawaii right now, so we talked with his friends. they say he was looking forward to his hawaii trip and can't believe he's gone. climbing on a rocky cliff on the eastern side of the big island was something paul loved to do. >> he loved adventure. he loved to just have the wind blow in his hair and just be out there exploring everything and enjoying life. that's what paul did. >> reporter: police say he was climbing with his friends on the cliff and a big wave knocked him into the ocean. he was swept about 100 yards where rescue crews found him face down. a neighbor who lives next door to the family in sunnyvale says he was like her own son. >> my heart just sank. i'm sorry. he was the best kid. >> reporter: rescue crews performed cpr but he later died at a hospital. his best
